In Commemoration of International Holodomor Memorial Day: Teaching the Genocide the World Forgot

The Ukrainian genocide, known as the Holodomor, was perpetrated by the Soviet Regime in 1932-1933. Today it remains a little known and frequently denied event even 87 years later. The basic information and facts about this genocide will be outlined by educator Valentina Kuryliw, along with strategies and approaches she has used to include the Holodomor in curricula across Canada within a human rights and genocide education context.
Valentina Kuryliw is a child of two Holodomor survivors, a former department head of history and social studies, and a 35-year career educator. She is currently the Director of Education at the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) in Toronto, a project of CIUS at the University of Alberta. She is also the Chair of the National Holodomor Education Committee (NHEC) of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and a Member of the Board (Holodomor Committee) of the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre (UCRDC) in Toronto, Canada. Her recent book is Holodomor in Ukraine, the Genocidal Famine 1932-1933: Learning Materials for Teachers and Students, Toronto and Edmonton: CIUS Press, 2018.
