Helmed by Ukraine’s premier director of historical dramas, Oles Yanchuk, The Secret Diary of Symon Petliura takes an unprecedented look at the short-lived Ukrainian People’s Republic, which declared an independant Ukraine in 1918, and the later assasination of the UNR’s chairman, Symon Petliura in Paris in 1926, orchestrated by the Kremlin at the start of the Soviet occupation of Ukraine. *Film in Ukrainian with English subtitles*
About the Film Director:
Oles’ Yanchuk has been the head of the legendary Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv since 2014. Through the initiative of the UCCA’s Film Committee, he has directed a total of 4 films about prominent periods and people in Ukrainian history:
· Assassination: An Autumn Murder in Munich (Atentat: Osinnie vbyvstvo u Munkheni), 1995, about the life of Stepan Bandera
· The Undefeated (Neskorenyi), 2001, about General Roman Shukhevych
· Metropolitan Andrei (Vladyka Andrei), 2008, about Archbishop Andrei Sheptytskyi
· The Secret Diary of Symon Petliura (Tayemnyi Shchodennyk Symona Petliury), 2018, about President Symon Petliura
Mr. Yanchuk is also the director of The Company of Heroes (Zaliznia Sotnia), 2004, as well as the award-winningFamine ’33 (Holod-33), 1991. He is the recipient of the coveted first prize of Henri-Langlois (European nomination), as well as numerous film-festival prizes around the world.
